Exposure Control Plan:
Employers must develop and implement a written Exposure Control Plan. A cornerstone of this plan is the mandate for Universal Precautions, which requires treating all human blood and certain body fluids as if they are known to be infectious (with the exception of sweat). Key components include:
- Hand Hygiene: Central to preventing the spread of infection.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Includes gloves, masks, goggles, and resuscitation bags. These must be provided to employees at no cost.
- Sharps Safety: Measure to prevent needle sticks and splashing, including the use of puncture-resistant containers for disposal.
- Labeling: Biohazard labels must be used for specimens and waste
- Hepatitis B Vaccination: Must be offered to all employees with occupational exposure within 10 days of employment, free of charge.
Post-Exposure Protocol: Immediate evaluation, counseling, and prophylaxis must be available following an exposure incident.
