HSI CPR, AED and First Aid programs are primarily designed for people who are not healthcare providers or professional rescuers but want—or are required—to learn emergency-care skills.
Before registering: Ask your employer, school or licensing agency for the exact certification brand and course it requires. If your paperwork specifically says “AHA,” select an American Heart Association course.

AHA vs. HSI: What’s the difference?
AHA and HSI are separate training organizations that issue different course completion cards. Their CPR programs draw from the same international body of resuscitation science, but the cards are not automatically interchangeable.
Health & Safety Institute
HSI is a nationally accredited emergency-care training organization offering CPR, AED, First Aid and professional-rescuer programs.
- Programs are approved by the HSI Medical Advisory Board.
- Programs are reviewed by the HSI Advisory Council.
- HSI is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Pre-Hospital Continuing Education, commonly called CAPCE.
American Heart Association
The AHA develops its own Heartsaver, BLS, ACLS and PALS course systems and issues its own course completion cards.
- AHA Heartsaver serves workplace and community responders.
- AHA BLS serves healthcare professionals and trained first responders.
- An employer may specifically require an AHA card.
Shared international science foundation
The International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation—ILCOR—reviews global resuscitation science and publishes consensus treatment recommendations. The AHA is an ILCOR member. HSI states that its emergency-care programs reflect current ILCOR science and conform to current AHA CPR and ECC guideline updates. What is the difference between HSI CPR and BLS?
CPR is the lifesaving skill. HSI CPR AED and BLS are different course pathways created for different responders and job requirements.
Healthcare worker or student? Check whether your employer or school requires BLS. A workplace CPR card may not satisfy a BLS requirement.
