Intravenous (IV) Therapy Course Overview:
This program provides LPNs, Graduate Nurses (GNs), and Returning Nurses with essential knowledge and hands-on skills in IV therapy, including Central Venous (CV) line management. The 30 hour IV Therapy course at Florida Training Academy consists of the following:
24-Hour Home Study
- Online study materials and downloadable eBook
- Course Modules with embedded tests (up to 6 months to complete)
- IV Therapy Certification upon successful completion of the “hands-on” Skills Validation Session
- Instructor support available via phone and email
6-Hour Hands-On Class (IV Skills Validation Session)
Practice IV therapy skills in a comfortable, supportive setting with experienced instructors. The hands-on class includes:
- Peripheral line starts
- Saline/heparin locks
- IV site care
- Drop factor calculations and piggybacking IV medications
Skills Performed in Class:
- Central line dressing change
- Flushing a Port-A-Cath
- Drawing blood from a PICC line and peripheral site
- Flushing a central line
- Starting an IV: priming the line, spiking the IV bag, and practicing multiple IV starts
Medical mannequins with realistic blood return are used. Students are encouraged to wear a dark or red shirt to class. For questions, contact our course coordinator at emathis@fltraining.com.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Understand the LPN’s role in IV therapy and central line management under the Florida Nurse Practice Act (NPA).
Safely perform IV therapy procedures under RN supervision.
Explain legal and institutional policies for IV therapy.
Identify key medical terminology and document accurately.
Describe peripheral and central venous anatomy for venipuncture.
Apply infection control principles during venipuncture.
Monitor, recognize, and manage IV complications.
Calculate IV fluid administration rates.
Understand peripheral vs. central heparin locks.
Differentiate TPN and PPN.
Assist in administering IV medications and blood transfusions, including managing potential reactions.
Steps for Completion:
To meet Florida Board of Nursing requirements and earn IV Therapy Certification, participants must:
Download and study the provided eBook and complete course modules.
Complete the post-test (minimum 80% score; one retake allowed).
Attend the 6-hour in-person training under RN supervision.
Successfully pass the post-test and clinical skills checklist.
Upon completion, participants earn 30 contact hours, and certificates are emailed within 24 business hours. Results are reported to CEBroker.
Note: Partial credit is not available.

- Attendance at the in-person skills validation session is required to complete the course.
- If you need to reschedule your skills training date (after registration), a $50 rescheduling fee will apply. Please notify us at least 72 hours in advance to process any changes.
