What is the difference between CPR and BLS?
CPR is the lifesaving skill. Heartsaver and BLS are two different AHA course pathways that teach CPR for different audiences and job requirements.

What is the difference between Heartsaver CPR and BLS?
Heartsaver is primarily for people with little or no medical training who respond in workplaces or the community. BLS is designed for healthcare professionals, trained first responders and healthcare students and includes a stronger focus on professional team response and ventilation skills.
How long is the AHA Heartsaver eCard valid?
AHA Heartsaver course completion cards are valid for two years. Your employer or licensing agency may set additional renewal requirements.

Adult Heartsaver CPR & AED Quick Reference
A plain-language review of adult CPR, AED use and the updated 2025 adult choking response.
Recognize the emergency
- Make sure the scene is safe.
- Tap the person and shout to check for a response.
- If the adult is unresponsive and has no normal breathing or is only gasping, act immediately.
- Call 911 or activate emergency response, put the phone on speaker and send someone for an AED.
Start high-quality adult CPR
30:2compressions to breaths for trained rescuers
100–120compressions per minute
At least 2 in.5 cm; avoid more than 2.4 in.
- Place both hands in the center of the chest.
- Press hard and fast, allow full chest recoil and keep interruptions short.
- If you are not trained or cannot give breaths, provide Hands-Only CPR for an adult: call 911 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest.
Use the AED as soon as possible
- Turn on the AED and follow its spoken and visual prompts.
- Bare the chest, attach the pads as shown and plug in the connector if required.
- Make sure no one is touching the person during analysis and shock delivery.
- After a shock—or if no shock is advised—resume CPR immediately for about 2 minutes, then follow the AED prompts again.
Adult choking: 2025 response
- If the person can cough or speak, encourage coughing and continue to watch for severe choking.
- For severe choking in a responsive adult, activate emergency response and give repeated cycles of 5 back blows followed by 5 abdominal thrusts.
- Use 5 chest thrusts instead of abdominal thrusts during late pregnancy or when you cannot encircle the person's abdomen.
- If the person becomes unresponsive, start CPR beginning with compressions. Before breaths, look for and remove only a visible object—never perform a blind finger sweep.
