Adult BLS Quick Reference
A plain-language review of the 2025 adult healthcare-provider BLS and choking response.
Recognize and activate
- Verify that the scene is safe.
- Check responsiveness and shout for nearby help.
- Activate the emergency-response system and send someone for an AED.
- Check breathing and a pulse simultaneously for no more than 10 seconds.
Choose the response
- Normal breathing and a pulse: Monitor until advanced care arrives.
- Abnormal or no breathing with a pulse: Give 1 breath every 6 seconds and recheck the pulse every 2 minutes.
- No breathing or only gasping and no definite pulse: Start CPR.
High-quality adult CPR and AED

- Allow complete chest recoil and minimize interruptions.
- Use the AED as soon as it is available and follow its prompts.
- After a shock—or when no shock is advised—resume CPR immediately for about 2 minutes.
Adult choking response
- If the person can cough, encourage coughing and watch for signs of severe obstruction.
- For severe choking in a responsive adult, activate emergency response and give repeated cycles of 5 back blows followed by 5 abdominal thrusts.
- Use 5 chest thrusts instead during late pregnancy or when you cannot encircle the abdomen.
- If the person becomes unresponsive, begin CPR with compressions. Before giving breaths, look for a visible object in the mouth.
